Space Tourism Evaluation

The project brief was to produce a multimedia campaign that promotes space tourism in our solar system and beyond. We were asked to create a poster advertising campaign and work in a small team to plan, film and edit a short commercial to promote space tourism. To start with I created a simple retro style poster on Adobe Illustrator featuring the planet mars and a rocket flying around it. This exercise was just a practice to get to know how to use the tools on Illustrator and to develop the retro sci-fi look. I created this without any research into the retro look. However, thanks to the grainy texture that I layered over the top using multiply on the transparency options so that it blended into the image I think it turned out well and looked very retro. I used this technique for most of my later posters. To help influence my space tourism poster I began researching 1950/60s science fiction art. I collected a range of film posters comic book/magazine covers and pages and any ret

I took influence from blade runner computer displays to create a kind of lens display to go over the top of one of the shots in our space tourism commercial. I did this to enhance the look of the film.

Low Poly Art

I learnt the technique to create low poly images on photoshop. First I saved an image of a desert  landscape, imported it to photoshop and added a gradient map over it so it looked like it belonged on our planet, Actaeon. Then I used The polygonal lasso tool to draw a polygon (usually a triangle) over the top of the image. I then clicked on filter, went to blur and used the average option to make the area inside the selected polygon a flat colour based on the average of all the colours in it. I repeated this method across the entire image to create the low poly art. I think I was successful with this technique as my image has a lot of depth and contrast to it. The averaged out colours in the polygonal style help create a stylistic piece of art but also a realistic range of light and shadowy colours giving it a lot of depth and perspective.

Nebula Art

Edited Version Original I tried a new technique using water colours and wet paper to create a bleed effect.

Actaeon Landscape Poster

Finished Poster Design Sketch I decided to draw out a sketch for what I imagined Actaeon's surface would look like. We had decided in the group that the majority of the planet would be natural as it represents an image of paradise. However, as we are promoting tourism to the planet tourists would need somewhere to stay and spacecraft would need somewhere to land to take them there. This is what inspired the design of the building in the original sketch. The building is very space age, in a retro futuristic style. It is built into a rocky mountainside with a waterfall running from it into a nearby river that winds around the side. There is a landing pad on the roof of the cylindrical main building for the spacecraft to land on (this suggests very advanced, precise technology) and a thin tower beside it connected with roofed bridges. The tower has a satellite disk on the top for the purpose of communication technologies. The landscape is very rocky, similar to the lan
